Coal Department Information

Loring Laboratories Ltd. is a 100% Canadian owned company, which has been in business for 41 years. The laboratory is separated into five departments: Coal, Assay, Oil & Gas, Geochemistry, and Diamond Indicator Minerals Department. The Coal Dept. has been serving the coal industry for the past 40 years.

ASTM (American Society of Testing and Materials) procedures are used throughout our laboratory for all the coal analyses. Our accuracy and reproducibility meets or exceeds those limits as set forth by ASTM. Quality control programs, technical consulting, and precise analysis complete the product mix to provide for total integration in the coal testing industry.

We also perform Biomass analysis, fuel analysis for the alternative fuel industry.

Our routine analyses in the Coal Dept. include the following:

Proximate Analysis (H2O, Ash, Volatile Matters, Fixed Carbon)
Total Sulphur
Forms of Sulphur
Calorific Value
Ultimate Analysis (Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, Sulphur, Oxygen)
Free Swelling Index
Mineral Analysis of Ash
Ash Fusion Temperature (Oxidizing and Reducing)
Hardgrove Grindability Index
Equilibrium Moisture
Trace Elements Analysis
Screen Analysis
Washability Test

In addition to the above, we also handle bulk samples (up to 2 Metric Tonne) and Coal Plant Evaluation test. For further information, please contact David Ko at our Calgary office.

Some of our clients include: Energy Mines and Resources Canada, Sherritt Coal Ltd., Teck Coal, TransAlta Utilities Corporation, Saskatchewan Power, Atco Group, Epcor Ltd., BC Ministry of Mines, Hillsborough Resources, First Coal Corporation, Compliance Energy Corporation, Peace River Coal Corp. etc
